Genealogists from
across the US and other countries will gather at the
Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon to attend the annual National
Genealogical Society Conference in The States, 16-19 May 2001. This year's
conference is hosted by the Genealogical Forum of Oregon, Inc. and offers
a
well-stocked exhibit hall, plus a wide variety of presentations, computer
labs, workshops, and other learning opportunities.
Lectures, labs and
events of special interest to genealogists who would like
to learn more about using a scanning device or digital camera to record
their family history include:
Computer Labs (registration
required, plus $50 per 2-hour lab)
1. Digital Imaging
Solutions from Hewlett-Packard: participants in this
interactive Digital Imaging lab will learn how digital cameras and flatbed
scanners can capture genealogical information that can be shared though
e-mail, online photo albums or on your own web page. (Hewlett-Packard
Staff,
Wednesday 10:00-12:00; Wednesday 3:00-5:00; Thursday, 9:00-11:00)
2. Image Editing:
participants in this hands-on lab will learn to edit and
prepare digital photographs for use in a genealogy database or family
history project. Sharing image collections with friends and family members
will also be discussed. Hand-out materials include 30-day trial versions
of

1. Family Photograph
Collection Workshop: learn to identify, preserve and
use your historic photograph collection in your research and to develop
you
family history. (Diane Gagel and Harold E. Hinds Jr., Thursday, 9:00-11:00)
2. One Hour Photo:
Locating and Crafting Photographs and Slides: see where
to locate photos of your ancestors or their communities and learn techniques
for creating and duplicating photographs and slides. (Tony Burroughs,
Thursday, 4:30-5:30)
3.Using a Digital
Camera for Your Genealogy: learn what features of various
digital cameras and accessories may be important to you as a genealogist.
See the benefits of being able to modify photographs and documents. (Richard
Wilson, Thursday, 4:30-5:30)
4. Technology Visits
the Courthouse, Capture those Documents: tips and
techniques for using various types of scanners, digital cameras, portable
computers, voice recognition software, and other technology to capture
images and words from genealogical documents. (James Slade, Friday 4:30-5:30
5. Editing and Enhancing
Your Digital Photos: see how easy it is to edit and
repair those old family photographs without having to purchase expensive
software or equipment. (Richard Wilson, Saturday 10:30-11:30)
Computer Learning
Center Activities - (located in the Exhibit Hall and open
to the public with no entrance fee)
1. Using a digital
camera for genealogical purposes (Pierre Cloutier,
Wednesday).
2. Digital cameras,
camcorders, and scanning devices; video, image editing
and image management applications (Dennis and Carla Ridenour, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday)
3. Visitors to the
Computer Learning Center will have the opportunity to
participate in a daily software give-away. Prizes include many of the
popular genealogy programs, plus FlipAlbum, FlipAlbum CD Maker, FlipAlbum

Maker Professional Edition, and FlipBrowser Gold.
